phonetics instead of text to speech.
instead of the voice to speech use actual phonetic sounds.

Are you saying like “ah” rather than a long “a” in order to encourage reading?

This would also tie in to i18n packs to get pronunciation right for a particular language.

Great idea. to expand on it further, it would be cool if it also showed a picture of an item that uses the sound in it. Then the rest of the letters in the word could zoom in to spell it. They would be in a different color so that the sound is highlighted. Then it could also say the word.
